Car Crash Tests and The Human Body
Bumper tests conducted by the insurance institute are intended to simulate bumper to bumper crashes. These car crashes consist of a series of 4 crash tests. The tests are for full front and full rear into a barrier. There are also corner impact tests on the bumpers. The bumper to bumper tests are conducted at 6 miles per hour and the corner bumpers are conducted at 3 miles per hour speed. In real life the collision occur very differently, because of the extreme variety in sizes and designs of vehicles. A 6 mile per hour collision is sufficient to cause whiplash injury. The design of the car may be good to withstand 6 mph impacts to protect the vehicle, but it does not mean the person will not be injured. In fact a person is more likely to get injured as the speed increases and the damage to the vehicle decreases. Greater damage to the vehicle often means the car absorbs the energy, older vehicles, such as collector cars from the 50's and 60's can result in death to the driver and very little damage to the vehicle, because the vehicles were designed to take a pounding, but the human body was not taken into consideration.
