Herniated Discs and Car Accidents
Herniated discs are a result of too much pressure on the discs. There are soft discs all along the spine which act as shock absorbers and when too much pressure is placed on these discs they herniate. Meaning they crack open, rip, or tear and protrude where the rip occurs. Sometimes there is a partial tear and they bulge and sometimes there is a complete tear which allows a soft pulp to come out. When they are bulging or herniated they often put pressure on the root of a nerve which causes numbness or severe pain. These types of injuries are can result from a car accident and might not be discovered until several months or even a year after a car accident. The primary reason is because no proper diagnosis are done. An MRI is often the best way to identify the injury, but some medical providers, especially when there is health insurance, are reluctant to request such exams. |
